SHORT QUESTIONS

Which types of materials are capable to transmit light?
Transparent materials are capable to transmit light.
[Very Important] What is reflection of light?
The bouncing back of light from the surface of an object is called reflection of light.
[Very Important] Which types of materials absorb light falling on them?
Dark colored objects (i.e. black) absorb light falling on them.
A material reflects 15% of the light while transmits 62% of the light falling over it. How much percentage of the light is absorbed by the material?
23% is absorbed by material.
What rule does the light obey in reflection?
Total incident light = Reflected light + absorbed light + transmitted light
Name the types of mirrors.
Concave mirrors and Convex Mirrors
[Very Important] How does a concave mirror differ from a convex mirror?
  • A concave mirror is a spherical mirror, which can reflect light only from its inner surface.
  • A convex mirror is a spherical mirror, which can reflect light only from its outer surface.
[Very Important] Why three mirrors are used in a kaleidoscope?
Three mirrors are arranged in the form of prism to form beautiful multiple images of small objects.
[Very Important] Why dentists use concave mirrors?
Dentists use concave mirrors to see the magnified view of teeth.
[Important] Why convex mirrors are used in cars as back view mirrors?
It helps the driver to view vehicles coming behind because it provides wider view.

LONG QUESTION

[Important] How will you differentiate between transmission, absorption and reflection of light?
  • Passing of light through some materials such as air, glass, water etc is called transmission of light.
  • The bouncing back of light from any surface is called reflection of light.
  • The part of light, which neither passes through an object nor is reflected from its surface, is absorbed by the object. This is called absorption of light.
Demonstrate between smooth, shiny and rough surfaces.
[Very Important] What are the characteristics of an image formed by a plane mirror?
·        The image is formed as much behind the mirror as much the object in front.
·        Image is upside (erect) and equal to the size of object
·        Image is inverted from left to right.
[Very Important] Describe the principle of a periscope using ray diagram.
·        It is used to see object above the level of viewer.
·        It consists of two plane mirrors making angles of 45o with horizontal direction.
·        Reflecting surfaces of both the mirrors are parallel and facing each other.
[Very Important] Explain the working of a kaleidoscope.
·        It shows beautiful colored patterns formed by multiple reflections.
·        As we rotate it, the pattern changes.
·        Three mirrors are arranged in the form of prism to form beautiful multiple images of small objects.
Draw a real image formed by a concave mirror with the help of ray diagrams.

Draw the virtual images formed be a concave mirror and a convex mirror. What is the difference between the two images?
In concave mirror, image is formed in front of mirror while in convex mirror image is formed behind the mirror.
