Define current.
The flow of free electrons through conductor is called electric current.
Write any one disadvantage of series circuit.
If there is a break I the circuit, the electrons cannot flow through the wires and no current flows.
How voltage is measured?
A voltmeter is used to measure the voltage. Voltage is the potential difference between two points.
State three effects of an electric current.
Heating Effect:
When electrons pass through wire, they transfer some of their energy to metal. This causes heat.
Chemical Effect:
Electric current also affect chemically. For example in electrolysis of NaCl, its components liberated at cathode and anode.
Magnetic Effect:
A wire having current produce deflection in compass placed near it.
Write two applications using electromagnets.
  • A large electromagnet is used in scrap yard to move the metallic bodies of cars.
  • A reed switch is used in burglar alarms where the reed switch is placed in the door frame and magnets are placed in the door and the door frame.
Write a short note on the following.
  • It is the main switch.
  • It controls the whole electricity of home.
  • It is safety device used to prevent shock.
  • It detects small voltage on metal casing if high voltage is detected.
Earth wires:
  • It is a copper wire connected to a metallic plate, which is buried at damp place deep under the ground.
  • It is used to prevent electric shock.
  • It is a metallic wire having low melting point.
  • This wire melts and breaks the circuit when current exceeds a safe limit.

Differentiate between parallel and series circuit.
Series Circuit:
  • In this circuit there is only one path for flow of current.
  • If one bulb/device in circuit went wrong, then no current will be available for rest of the devices/bulbs and they will be turned off.
  • The more bulbs that are added to the circuit, the dimmer each bulb will be.
Parallel Circuit:
  • In this circuit there are many paths for flow of current.
  • If one bulb/device in circuit went wrong, there will be no affect on other devices/bulbs.
  • The more bulbs that are added to the circuit, there will be no effect on other bulbs.

Explain resistance as an opposition to the flow of current. What is the relationship between voltage and resistance?
·         The current you get for a particular voltage depends on a property of the conductor called resistance.
·         Resistance is the hindrances to the flow of current.
·         A conductor with high resistance will allow a small current to flow.
·         The resistance of a wire depends on length of the wire and thickness of the wire.
·         The equation linking current, voltage and resistance is:
Voltage = Current X Resistance
·         Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω). A resistance of one ohm carries a current of one ampere if there is one volt voltage across it.

List major uses of electricity at homes.
·         It is used to lighten the bulbs.
·         It is used to run electric appliances i.e. Refrigerator, Washing Machine etc.
·         It is used to draw water from tanks and underground deposits.
·         It is used to run TV, Radio, and Computer etc.
·         It is used to run Fan, AC etc.

List some electrical hazards. State the causes of these hazards.
·         Wires with damaged insulation may join together to cause short circuit.
·         If we plug in many appliances in one socket, then over loading may also cause short circuit.
·         Risk of electric shocks become more in damp places due to leakage of electricity through water.
·         Using metallic wire in kite flying is very risky. It may cause heavy life and financial loss.

Write down five precautionary measures you can take to ensure the safe use of electricity in the home.
·         Insulation of electric wires should not be damaged.
·         Do not touch plugs and switches with wet hands.
·         Never use plugs that are broken or have loose wires.
·         Turn the switch off while plugging or unplugging an electric appliance.

·         Main switch should be off when replacing electric bulbs or tube lights or cleaning ceiling fans, refrigerators etc.
