How do scientists believe the universe began?
Scientists believe that the Universe began with an enormous explosion called Big Bang.
Define the term star and galaxies.
  • Stars are the shining globes of gas that give out light and heat.
  • Galaxies are the assembly of millions of stars.
Write a short note on Milky Way.
·         At night we can see a broad bond of light that is formed by minions of stars.
·         It is in fact a part of our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
·         The name given to the galaxy is because of its appearance like bright, creamy band of stars stretching across the sky.
Write the names of two major constellations.
·         Big Dipper
·         Cassiopeia
On which factors brightness of a star depends?
Brightness of a star depends on two factors:
i)             The luminosity of the star
ii)           The distance to the star.
What is meant by black holes?
  • It is the last stage of life cycle of massive star.
  • In this stage the star is so dense that not even light can escape from it and is no more glowing.

Explain the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe.
·         The universe refers to everything that exists.
·         The universe consists of many galaxies of stars.
·         In 1929, Edwin Hubble stated that the universe is expanding like a balloon.
·         The galaxies are moving away from center with very fast speed.
·         For this reason now it is believed that there was a big explosion that caused the formation of the universe.
·         It is called the Big Bang theory.

Describe three different types of galaxies.
Spiral Galaxies:
  • They have flat disk like shape with a bulge in the center are called a spiral galaxies.
  • This type of galaxies has a few or many spiral arms.
  • The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy.
Elliptical Galaxies:
  • These are similar to balls.
  • These are oval in shape.
  • Trillions of stars are present in an elliptical galaxy
  • These galaxy do not rotate.
Irregular Galaxies:
  • The galaxies which do not have definite shape are called irregular galaxies.
  • These galaxies are of many shapes and sizes.
  • The clouds of Magellan, is an irregular galaxy.
  • Its size is very small.

Explain the birth and death of our sun.
Birth of our Sun:
·         Like other stars, the sun is born from nebula which is great clouds of gasses and dust.
·         The dust particles and gasses in a nebula are packed into a hot spinning ball of matter called protostar.
·         After ten million years, the protostar grew denser and hotter.
·         Then it becomes a star emitting heat and light energy.
Death of our Sun:
·         The matter of star is converting into energy.
·         As a star loses energy it expands until it forms a red giant.
·         After next five billion years, the hydrogen of sun may be used up.
·         Then the sun will collapse and becomes a white dwarf.
·         Sun will not emit energy any more.
·         This will be the end of our sun.

Explain the working of a reflecting telescope with the help of a diagram.
·         A reflecting telescope uses a concave mirror to collect and reflects it on a smaller mirror.
·         The smaller plane mirror focuses and reflects light into the eyepiece.
·         The convex lens present in eyepiece enlarges the image.
·         In this telescope, the eyepiece is on one side of the tube from where image of the distant object is seen.
·         So, it does not block the incoming light.
