SHORT QUESTIONS

[Very Important] Write two advantages of photosynthesis?
·        It maintains level of CO2 in environment.
·        It provides food for producers and consumers.

[Important] What are the conditions or factors necessary for photosynthesis to take place?
·        Water
·        Carbon Dioxide
·        Chlorophyll
·        Light
·        Temperature

Write three characteristics of a leaf suited for photosynthesis.
·        It should be flat and broad.
·        Stomata should be present.
·        Palisade and spongy mesophyll are photosynthetic cells.

[Important] How temperature affects the rate of photosynthesis?
If the temperature gradually rises up to 40oC, the photosynthesis slows down and may stop altogether.

[Very Important] Write four differences between photosynthesis and respiration.
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Light is used
Light is not used
Chlorophyll is needed
Chlorophyll is not needed
Glucose is formed
Glucose is broken down
Water is used
Water is produced

[Very Important] What is the function of palisade mesophyll and spongy mesophyll?
These are photosynthetic cells. The cells have chloroplasts containing chlorophyll, water, carbon dioxide to make glucose by the process of photosynthesis.

[Very Important] Write the simple equation of photosynthesis?

                                        Chlorophyll
Carbon dioxide + Water       ----------------------> Glucose + Oxygen
                                        Sunlight

[Important] What are the benefits of photosynthesis?
·        It maintains the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in environment.
·        It provides food for producers and consumers.

[Very Important] Write the simple equation for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen ----------------> Carbon dioxide + Water + ATP Energy

[Important] What is the importance of respiration?
In respiration ATP energy is produced which is used to perform all the activities of life.

How does carbon dioxide enter the cell of a leaf?
Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through stomata.

[Very Important] Where do the plants get their food from?
·        Plants get their food from the process of photosynthesis.
·        Their food is stored in leaves in the form of glucose.
·        Phloem cells are responsible to supply the food to all parts of plant.

[Very Important] Why a food chain always begins with green plants?
Every food chain always begins with green plants because green plants are the producers of food.
LONG QUESTIONS

[Very Important] Describe the internal structure of leaf.
Upper Epidermis:
It is upper most layer of cells. It has waterproof coating of wax called cuticle.
Palisade mesophyll:
It is present below the upper epidermis. These cells are long and narrow.
Spongy mesophyll:
These are round cells with large air spaces. These cells contain chloroplasts.
Lower epidermis:
It is under most layer of cells. It also has waxy layer. It contains tiny openings called stomata. Two guard cells are present around each stoma.

[Important] Describe the process of photosynthesis.
·        Plants obtain carbon dioxide from air.
·        The chlorophyll present in leaves absorb sunlight.
·        The chlorophyll uses energy from sunlight to combine water and carbon dioxide in a special way.
·        Following equation describes the process of photosynthesis.
                                        Chlorophyll
Carbon dioxide + Water       ----------------------> Glucose + Oxygen
                                        Sunlight

[Important] What is the role of water in photosynthesis?
·        Glucose is made in the chloroplasts. As result water enters the guard cell.
·        Water helps in opening and closing of stomata.
·        If leaves get less water, it will decrease the rate of photosynthesis.
·        Opening of stomata depends upon water which provides more carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.

[Important] How light and temperature affect the process of photosynthesis?
·        Sunlight provides energy for the synthesis of glucose. Photosynthesis takes place faster on a bright day.
·        A suitable temperature is also necessary for photosynthesis. this process slows down and even stops when temperature rises up to 40oC.
How is a leaf adapted for photosynthesis?
·        Leaves are flat and broad, so that there is greater exposure to sunlight.
·        The stomata allow the carbon dioxide to enter the cell of plant.
·        Palisade and spongy mesophyll are photosynthetic cells. The cells have chloroplasts, water, and carbon dioxide to make glucose.

Describe an experiment to show that photosynthesis takes place in the green parts of a leaf?
·        Take some variegated leave and make sketch showing green and yellow area.
·        Then put the boiled leaf in test tube containing alcohol.
·        Then keep the leaf in Petri dish and put some iodine solution.
·        It will be observed that only green parts stained blue or blue black.
·        Yellow patches remained unchanged.
·        It shows that chlorophyll or green leaf is necessary for photosynthesis.
Describe the process of respiration in plants.
An organism has to breakdown the food or glucose to release the energy.
This breakdown of food takes place by oxidation.
This process occurs in animals and plants in every cell and called respiration.
The process of respiration is shown by equation:

Glucose + Oxygen ----------------> Carbon dioxide + Water + ATP Energy

[Very Important] Write the differences between photosynthesis and respiration
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Light is used
Light is not used
Chlorophyll is needed
Chlorophyll is not needed
Glucose is formed
Glucose is broken down
Water is used
Water is produced
Energy is stored
Energy is released
It takes place during day time.
It takes place all the time.
