SHORT QUESTIONS

What is pollination? Name the agents which bring about pollination.
Pollination is a process in which pollens transfer from anther to stigma.

Name the parts of a flower.
A flower consists of 4 parts.
i)      Calyx
ii)      Corolla
iii)     Androecium
iv)     Gynoecium

What is vegetative propagation?
When reproduction takes place only from the vegetative parts of a plant (i.e. root, stem, leaves etc.), it is known as vegetative propagation or asexual reproduction.

Write down the names of different parts of gynoecium?
It is fourth whorl. It is female part. It consists of carpel. Each carpel consists of stigma, style and ovary.

What is sexual reproduction?
It is type of reproduction in which two gametes from both parents fuse to form a zygote. Fertilization is the fusion of male gamete with the female gamete.

How seeds and fruits are formed?
After fertilization zygote is formed which divides many times and form embryo. The ovule develops into seed and ovary ripens into a fruit.

LONG QUESTIONS

Describe structure of flower with a neat labeled diagram.
A flower consists of four parts:
Calyx:
It is outermost whorl. It consists of sepals. Sepals are green and protect the inner parts.
Corolla:
It is second whorl. It consists of petals. These are of many colors. They help in pollination.
Androecium:
It is third whorl. It consists of stamens. It is male part. Each stamen consists of filament and anther. Anther contain pollen grains.
Gynoecium:
It is fourth whorl. It is female part. It consists of carpel. Each carpel consists of stigma, style and ovary.

What is pollination? Explain types of pollination with examples.
Pollination is a process in which pollens transfer from anther to stigma. It has two types:
Self Pollination:
It takes place when pollen reaches to stigma of same flower or any other flower of same plant. Examples: pea, cotton, tomato, rice etc.
Cross Pollination:
It takes place when pollen reaches to stigma of another flower of another plant. Examples: rose, sunflower, apple etc.

Differentiate between wind-pollinated and insect pollinated plants.
Wind Pollinated:
·         It takes place in flowers without petals.
·         It is not very efficient.
·         They produce large number of pollen to ensure that some reach to stigma.
·         Most grasses are pollinated by this method.
Insect Pollinated:
·         Some insects need nectar of flowers.
·         Pollen grains of some flowers have rough and sticky surfaces.
·         Due to this they stick to surface of insects and carried to stigma.

Define fertilization and give its three major steps.
The process of fusion of male and female gametes is called fertilization. It takes place in three steps:
Germination:
Pollen trapped by stigma germinates to produce a long tube. It reaches to ovary through style.
Zygote Formation:
The nucleus of pollen divides into two male gametes. It bursts releasing male gametes. One gamete fuse with egg and form zygote.
Embryo Formation:
The zygote divides many times to form embryo.
