SHORT QUESTIONS

What is an environment?
In a given area, everything around us makes up our environment.
[Very Important] Name the two components of environment.
·        Biotic Components.
·        Abiotic components.
What are producers?
The green plants that make their own food are called producers.
What are consumers?
The organisms that cannot produce their own food and eat others are called consumers.
[Very Important] Distinguish between carnivores and omnivores.
·        Animals that eat other animals only are called carnivores.
·        Animals that eat plants and other animals are called omnivores.
Give an example of
Predator: Lion
Prey: Zebra
Parasite: Mosquito
[Very Important] Why a desert is hot and dry. Give two reason.
·        They receive very low rain fall.
·        They have very few plants and trees.
[Very Important] Distinguish between a desert and a rain forest.
·        Desserts are hottest and dry places. They receive very low rain fall.
·        The rain forest are thickly planted areas. They receive heavy rain fall.
Why a rain forest is warm and wet?
Because they are thickly planted and receive heavy rain falls.
[Very Important] Name three types of relationships of organisms.
i)      Predation.
ii)     Parasitism
iii)    Mutualism
[Very Important] What will happen if there are no decomposers?
Recycling of materials back to the environment will stop if there are no decomposers.
What will happen if there are no predators?
The balance of size of population will be disturbed.
Why do large carnivores eat other large animals rather than small animals?
Because they need large quantity of food to survive.
[Very Important] How does water affect the distribution of organism on land?
If there is less water we shall find less number of organisms in that area because water is essential for survival of life.
[Very Important] In the desert days are hot but the nights are cold. Do you known why?
The very dry air of the desert holds little moisture and thus holds little heat so as soon as the sun sets, the desert cools considerably. Clear, cloudless skies also help to quickly release heat at night.

LONG QUESTIONS

[Very Important] Identify the components of environment.
There are two types of components of the environment
Biotic Components:
·        Producers
·        Consumers
·        Decomposers
Abiotic Components:
·        Light
·        Temperature
·        Water
·        Soil
·        Air

[Very Important] Describe the abiotic components of the environment?
Light:
All organisms need light for growth. Plants need sunlight to produce food.
Temperature:
All organisms can live in particular temperature range. There are no or very less organisms in the areas in severe temperature.
Water:
It is very essential for life. If there is less water we shall find less number of organisms in that area.
Soil:
It provides support and nutrients for plants to grow. If there are more plants then there will be more animals.
Air:
Air has many gases. All organisms need oxygen to live and plants need carbon dioxide to prepare food.

Describe the physical factors which make up the environment of a desert and a rain forest.
Desert:
·        They are hottest and driest.
·        They receive very less rain fall i.e. less than 25 cm per year.
·        There are very few plants and trees.
·        In deserts, days are hot and nights are cold.
Rain Forest:
·        They are thickly planted.
·        They receive large rain falls. i.e. 200 cm or more per year.
·        The weather is warm here.

[Very Important] Describe the relationship between biotic and abiotic components of the environment.
·        All living things depend on other living things.
·        Herbivores are food for carnivores.
·        Many plants provide shelter and protection to other plants and animals.
·        The interaction between organisms may be beneficial or harmful.

[Very Important] Explain how abiotic factors affect the ability of plants to make their own food.
Light:
Plants need sunlight to produce food.
Temperature:
Plants need proper temperature to grow.
Water:
Without water, plants cannot make their food.
Soil:
It provides support and nutrients for plants to grow.
Air:
All plants need carbon dioxide to prepare food which they receive from air.

How is soil important to an environment .
·        Soil provides support and nutrients for plants to grow.
·        If there are fewer nutrients, the plants will not grow.
·        A soil having all things necessary for growth of plants is best soil.

[Very Important] What is predation? Explain predators - prey relationship.
·        The feeding of one organism upon another is called predation.
·        For example lion is predator and zebra is prey.
·        It is an interaction where one species eats others.

[Very Important] What is mutualism? Explain giving an example.
·        It is a relationship in which both organisms get benefits from each other.
·        For example bees collect nectar from flowers and in turn help them in pollination.
