How many atoms of different elements are there in formulas of the following compounds.
CH4 [C=1, H=4]
C12H22O11 [C=12, H=22, O=11]
CH3COOH [C=2, H=4,O=2]
H2SO4  [H=2, S=1, O=4]
[Very Important] Name the method which is most suitable for separating the following.
Oxygen from air                                  =      Sublimation
Coffee grains from coffee solution         =      Filtration
Colored components from ink                        =      Chromatography
Pure water from sea water                    =      Distillation

[Very Important] Which elements are represented by:
C      =      Carbon                       Ca     =      Calcium
Mg    =      Magnesium                 Al     =      Aluminium
Zn     =      Zinc                          Cu     =      Copper
[Very Important] Write three properties of metals and non-metals.
·        They are good conductor of electricity.
·        They have high melting and boiling points.
·        They can be changed into any shape. e.g. sheet, wire etc.
Non Metals:
·        They are bad conductor of electricity.
·        They have low melting and boiling points.
·        They are brittle and cannot changed into various shapes.

Write names of five objects made of metals which are present in your kitchen.
Spoon, Knife, Pan, Glass, Plates
[Very Important] Write four uses of steel.
·        Steel is used to make utensils.
·        Steel is used to make surgical instruments.
·        Steel is used to make handles.
·        Steel is used to make gates.
Name some objects made from copper.
Copper wires, cells, vase etc

[Very Important] Give reasons:
Carbon dioxide is a compound:
Because in carbon dioxide, 1 atom of carbon is chemically combined with 2 atoms of oxygen.

An egg is a mixture:
Because an egg contain compounds of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, hydrogen and oxygen.
Lemon juice is not a compound:
Because lemon and water are combined physically to form mixture.
Mineral water is a mixture:
Because mineral water contain salts in water and are mixed physically.

A student heated a mixture of iron fillings and sulphur strongly. At the end, a black solid had been formed.
a) Give chemical name of the black solid
Ferric Sulphide (FeS)
b) Explain the difference between mixture of sulphur and iron and the compound formed.
Fe and S are molecules where as FeS is a compound.

[Important] Can elements lose their properties? Explain.
Yes elements can lose their properties when they combine chemically with other elements to form compound.

[Important] How will you separate a mixture of salt and water?
We can separate a mixture of salt and water by the process of distillation.

When carbon burns in oxygen, carbon dioxide is produced. Identify elements and compounds in this reaction.

C + O2       ----------------------------->    CO2
(Elements)                                         (Compound)

When some solutions are mixed together a precipitate is formed. A precipitate do not dissolve in the mixture of solutions. How can you separate precipitate from the solution.
We can separate precipitate from the solution by the process of filtration.

What technique would you use to identify the food coloring used in a sweet?
We use chromatography to identify the food coloring used in sweet.

[Very Important] Suggest some ways to reduce carbon dioxide in the air.
·        Plant more trees.
·        Proper service of the engines of the vehicles
·        Minimize the burning process.

[Important] Why forest fires produce plenty of carbon dioxide in air?

Plants are mainly composed of carbon and hydrogen. When they burn, produce carbon dioxide.
