SHORT QUESTIONS

What is atmospheric temperature and how is it measured?
·        It is the degree of hotness and coldness of the atmosphere.
·        Since air represents the atmosphere, the temperature here belongs to the air.
·        This temperature of air is measured at about 1.25 meters above the ground.

Explain the mechanism by which the air is heated and cooled.
·        When temperature of particular region increases due to various activities, its air gets hot and lighter.
·        When temperature of particular region decreases due to various activities, its air gets cooler and heavier.

Define Isotherms and state how they vary over land and sea?
Isotherm is an imaginary line that connects points of equal temperature. Distance from sea affects the temperature. Therefore places near sea have moderate temperature.

LONG QUESTION

Describe the vertical and horizontal distribution of Temperature.
Vertical Distribution:
·        When we move upward in the atmosphere, temperature is decreased.
·        For example, when we go to Murree, weather is cooler than Islamabad due to altitude.
Horizontal Distribution:
·        On the surface of the Earth, temperature varies from place to place.
·        Due to different temperature conditions, the climate varies in different parts of the world.
·        On the basis of temperature the Earth has been divided into three different broad zones:
o   Torrid Zone (Hot)
o   Temperate Zone (Moderate)
o   Frigid Zone (Cold)

Explain the term "Insolation". How does it heat the surface of the Earth?
·        Sun is the primary source of energy.
·        The receipt of incoming rays from Sun is called insolation.
·        The word insolation is a contraction of three words Incoming Solar Radiation.
·        The Sun is the source of heat and temperature on the Earth but our atmosphere is not heated by direct heat absorption from the sun rays.
·        It is actually warmed when the Earth surface radiates back the incoming energy.

Write a note on the phenomenon of "Inversion of Temperature" and the factors that influence it.
·        When height increases, then temperature decreases.
·        But this incident is reversed in certain conditions.
·        This means as we go upward, the temperature starts increasing instead of decreasing.
·        This is called 'temperature inversion'.
·        Inversion layer of temperature is formed under certain conditions close to the ground.
·        Some conditions for temperature inversion are absence of wind, clear sky, long winter nights, cold dry air and snow covered surface.
